Tattoo guide
Tattoo prep.
Quick answers to help you feel ready before your tattoo appointment.
How do I pick the right design?+
Choose a design that feels personal to you. Bring any ideas, sketches, or reference photos you like, and your artist can help turn them into a tattoo that fits your style, placement, and vision.
Do I need a consultation?+
A consultation is not always required, but it is the best way to review your design, placement, size, and any questions before your appointment.
Should I eat before my appointment?+
Yes. Eat a good meal before your appointment and stay hydrated. Being hungry or dehydrated can make the session harder on your body.
Can I drink alcohol before my tattoo?+
No. Avoid alcohol and blood-thinning medications before your appointment, as they can affect bleeding and the tattoo process.
Can I get tattooed if I have a tan or sunburn?+
It’s best to avoid tattooing over sunburned, irritated, or sensitive skin. If your skin is burned or uncomfortable, contact the studio before your appointment.
How long does a tattoo take to heal?+
Most tattoos look healed within 1–3 weeks, but full healing under the skin can take longer. Follow your aftercare instructions to help your tattoo heal properly.
Should I follow my artist’s prep instructions?+
Yes. Always follow the instructions your artist gives you. They know what will help you prepare properly for your specific tattoo.
A little preparation goes a long way. Follow your artist’s instructions, and contact your XS location if you have any questions. Next: tattoo aftercare.
